Excessive Data Usage LTE

We are testing LTE on our device. It should be reporting 50-100 KB/day, but we've had several days where data usage was 300, 400 & 500 KB. After closer inspection each of the excessive data days show a couple events in Aeris's log that were 100KB ea. Then we checked our receiving database and show no data received during these events  and no errors or data issues in our device either, yet a data session was open and Aeris reporting up & down activity. All other data actvity can be linked to data in our database. Any thoughts on why these random spikes of data usage?

Hello,

Can you confirm if you are using SSL connection?  In a past instance one of our customers discovered that his usage recorded high when using SSL connection vs. non SSL, that may be something to look into.  Are the sessions being initiated by the device or your server?

We use UDP and the session are initiated by the device.

Thank you for the update.  If the device is initiating the data, is it via an application, how is that communication initiating?  Is the 2 way communication happening over a VPN connection or public internet?  If your server is not receiving the data it may help to understand what path the device is taking to reach your server.  Do you have other devices that are able to communication end to end normally as compared to the one you are having this issue wtih?

Hello Norma,

I'm working with Madv.
It's our device initiating the communication with the server, the device open only UDP socket with the server and send and receive some data. We haven't VPN for this connection.
With this device we can manage all send/receive, we have logs of send/receive frames. We have logs on the server too, and  we can check the frame receive and we have seen that the server receives all UDP frames.
We haven't other device to compare.
I did some tests for example on one connection the device sends 58 Bytes and receives 19 Bytes (Device logs) and the server receive all frame, on Aeris account, we can see 224 (Bytes) From device and 514 (Bytes) To device, with a duration of 1094 second. This usage looks like correct. And on another one connection (with same data usage) we can see on Aeris 16964 (Bytes) From device and 27237 (Bytes) To device, with a duration of 9535 second.
With this result we can see on the second example there are lots of data usage additional. With this information do you know why ?

Regard,
Antoine

Hello Antoine,

Thank you for the detailed information.  I believe what you are asking is if we can provide the source of the high traffic i.e. trace data, is that correct?  If that is the case unfortunately the LTE SIM is an AT&T SIM and they have privacy information which we can not obtain trace data reports.  What I may be able to do is request they provide details on the type of data transmitting i.e. http.  Let me know if this is what you are looking to get information on that could explain the higher data usage.

Yes, I would like to resolve this high traffic. If you can obtain details, it will allow us to understand all the traffic. For us the better day is the 07/27/2017.

Antoine

HI Antoine,

Our carrier partner provide an update, stating that going as far back as the beginning of August is not possible to run trace analysis.  They have about a 48 hour period to be able to run such traces and most recent check discovered there is no indication that there is high usage.

For example as of query against Sept 6th the recorded usage for the day was:

10686 bytes = 10.686 KB
23518 bytes = 23.518 KB

total 34.204 KB

The portal provide usage in bytes which you can see I converted to KB.  Let me know if you are seeing different results.

thank you,
Norma

Hi Norma,

Yes the usage looks like correct but we haven't change nothing. Do you change someting on the SIM data plan?
We need to found the problem because if one the day this one retry to have excessive data usage, we will have problem.

Antoine

Hi Antoine,

Nothing was changed on the our end or the carrier end.  I would recommend setting up alerts to notify you before you are reaching your rate plan threshold.  You can setup "MyAlerts" by navigating to the following:

Quicklinks
Setup MyAlerts
Create new alert

If a problem exists setting up an alert will allow you to enable any blocking if necessary.  Unfortunately the recent findings do not indicate excessive usage in the event you are alerted of high usage based on your defined alert parameters the issue can be revisited.  Although it will be necessary to meet criteria of 48 hours from incident to race data.  Let me know if you have any further questions.
